The right necklace or pendant will add style to anything she wears. In addition to being a fashionable gift, giving her a necklace gives you the opportunity to perform the classically romantic gesture of putting it around her neck for the first time.
In general, a necklace is defined as any type of chain or length of precious metal or gems. A pendant features a single jewel, pearl or charm, usually suspended from a chain. A pearl strand is a length of closely strung pearls.
Both are jewelry worn around your neck. The basic difference in the two is that a pendant is a removable gem or jewelry accent that hangs from a chain, and a necklace has a gem(s) or accent(s) permanently attached. A necklace that fits properly lies flat around your neck and shoulders.
Cylindrical links form a solid, flexible chain with curved edges.
A twisted herringbone, resembling a spiraling chain of interlocking elements.
Spiral-like chain with an appearance of two thick strands woven together.
Connecting round or oval rings, usually in a curvaceous, contoured manner.
Flat chain with links close together for a smooth look.
Strands of metal intertwined to resemble fabric.
Oval links with bars in the middle.
Alternating rectangular and circular links.
Oval, curved links that lie flat on the neck.
Round, interconnecting links.
Square, interconnecting links.
Clasps are used to close bracelets and necklaces and keep them secure around the wrist or neck. The most popular types of claps are shown below.
Lobster Claw: This clasp resembles a lobster claw. It has a spring inside and hooks through a circle or tube at the opposite end of the chain.
Barrel: A square-shaped wire fits into a barrel-shaped tube and locks into place. Sometimes a barrel clasp has a figure-eight safety clasp on the side.
Spring Ring: A round clasp that opens with a coil spring.
When selecting a necklace or pendant, consider that the length will determine where it will lie on her chest. Remember that longer lengths accentuate the bust while shorter lengths feature the beautiful lines of her neck.
16 Inch Choker Will emphasize her neckline and it comes just above the collarbones.
18 Inch Princess Is the most common length of chain, hanging over the collarbones.
24 Inch Opera A very long chain that usually lays over a blouse or dress.
Please note that the length of the necklace is measured from the tip of one end to the other, including the clasp. A chain may be 18-inches-long, but the clasp may add an additional 0.50 - 0.75 inches.
